Hapa

HAPA was founded out of “opportunity”. After the chaos generated by February 22nd 2011, Maureen Taane and Yuri Bacas Hosaka realised they shared a dream and decided to get together to make it happen. Because life is short!!!

Maureen Taane (Ngati Maniapoto) is an experienced Cantabrian retailer with strong links within the New Zealand design industry. Yuri Bacas Hosaka was born in Japan but grew up in Madrid, Spain, where fashion and art play an important role.

When choosing a name for their business, they searched long and hard to find something meaningful that would represent them. HAPA is a word of Hawaiian origin that means literally “Half”, which was used to refer to people with mixed racial heritage. HAPA works directly with many local kiwi designers and artists as well as with international names from places as far as Miami, New York, Madrid or Ljubljana. HAPA will sell contemporary jewellery, giftware and homeware, as well as high quality hand-made toys for the young ones.
