CITY MALL UPGRADE - Cashel Street East
Following significant support for an extension of the tram through City Mall revealed during the mall refurbishment consultation in September – October 2006, a tram study commissioned in 2007 found that an extension of the existing tram route could bring a number of benefits to Christchurch, and the central city in particular. The Council decided to include a tram foundation as part of the mall upgrade to future-proof if the tram was extended. Originally, the foundation was only in High Street but the CCBA successfully lobbied to get it included in Cashel Street.
Works commenced in July 2008 and the first stage was completed by November of that year.
Air Bridge Removal
Following the success of removing the High Street air bridge, negotiations had began to allow the removal of the Cashel Street air bridge. After successfully negotiating its removal, the second air bridge was removed.
The impact was similar to High Street with an increase of light and space, opening a direct line of sight to the Bridge or Remembrance.
