CCBA EARTHQUAKE NOTICES - Dec 26th 2010
Sunday, 26 December 2010 2:10 p.m.
LATEST: The Christchurch City Council considered declaring a brief state of emergency following dramatic aftershocks this morning. Shallow shocks were felt overnight and this morning at 8am and 10.30am, nearly four months after the big quake. Power was out in parts of the CBD after the 10.30am after-shock, which was magnitude 4.9 and located within 5km of Christchurch.
Acting Mayor Ngaire Button said officials were assessing the damage throughout the city.
The Christchurch City Council had called back in key communications and civil defence staff to get "all the information we can''. Staff were assessing whether a brief state of emergency should be called or if a major clean-up operation was the next step.
The aftershock cut power to an estimated 40,000 Orion customers.
Acting Mayor Ngaire Button has just informed me that the Christchurch City Council will be closing City Mall until a full assessment of the damage caused by this mornings 4.9 magnitude earthquake which was centred in Brougham Street at approx. 10.30am.
I would ask that you please let me know of issues you may be facing so we can start to coordinate relief or assessment efforts to get you back up and trading as soon as we can.
Other new CBD cordons now in place.
1. Colombo Street - Between Lichfield and Hereford Street
2. Oxford Tce - Between Cashel and Hereford Street
3. Hereford Street - Between Oxford Tce and Manchester Street
4. Manchester Street - Between Gloucester Street and Cashel Street
This is a blow for us all but I ask you to try and maintain the positivity we had started to build up pre Christmas. We will come through this again and it will be important to portray a positive stance if we are to get through this new phase.
Kind regards,
Paul Lonsdale
