Update - CBD Earthquake Notice Monday, 27 December 2010 12:40 p.m.
I was at this mornings emergency briefing and many of you will know that the cordon has been lifted on Cashel Street between Colombo & High Street so you will be able to open your business for trade.
We are working with the emergency services and building owners in Cashel Street, City Mall between Colombo St & Oxford Tce to try and have this part reopened as quickly as we can. We are hoping for this to happen by tomorrow but will have a better idea later today.
The only street closure is Manchester Street but the closure has now been extended down to Worcester Street.
I have been asked if the council is going to assess the buildings and the answer is no as this is the responsibility of the property owners. The only time the council step in and use the red, yellow & green place card system is when the city goes under a state of emergency.
I would encourage all businesses who have concerns to talk to their property owners or property managers. I would ask that all property owners who have a cordon around their building to have them assessed as quickly as you can. The sooner we get the city cleaned up of fences and cordons the quicker we can start to communicate a more positive message out to the community.
Boxing Day Sale (Replay)
It will be my intension to work on a major city promotion once we are mostly cleaned up and will be looking to hold another Boxing Day - City Centre ONLY. This time, we will look to run it over a weekend (Sat & Sun) before the two hour free parking finishes at the end of January. For this promotion to work I will need the support of all the city business community.
No one is to blame for this act of mother nature so we have to remain positive, focused and work hard to turn this situation around. We have done it before, with December trade returning to some sort of normality for many.
Let's continue to work together and I will continue to update you... in the meantime....
Stay safe - stay positive.
Regards,
Paul Lonsdale
