City Advertising & Promotional Panels

I have received a positive response to the city advertising and promotional panel idea and will be calling a meeting with these precinct representatives now early next week. I decided to hold back as I have some very exciting ideas I wish to discuss with them. I am meeting with key retail businesses to float a very exciting idea and if I get a positive response I will discuss this the rest of you. I want to thank the precinct representatives for stepping up to help their area. Well done. If you feel you could contribute, please let me know.

Boxing Day (Replay) Promotion - Saturday 12 Feb

We have now confirmed a date for the Boxing Day (Replay) promotion and we are making progress with many businesses saying they want to be a part of this. I have confirmation from Ballantynes, Glasssons, Hallensteins, Dick Smith, The Rockshop, Levis and Ibis Hotel being a part of the promotion plus many other businesses within the city centre. Some businesses state they will bring outdated and excess product from around NZ to Christchurch central city to be discounted on the Boxing Day (Replay)promotion. I have spoken with CPIT and they are looking to bring in their Circo Art performers to add some colour and life to the streets. I would be keen to hear from you if you are planning anything special for the day

Tram work restarts for 2011

Work on the extension of Christchurch ’s Central City tram route is restarting for the year following a slight delay as a result of damage to buildings caused by the Boxing Day earthquake. The project remains on track for completion in time for Rugby World Cup 2011.

High Street

Tram tracks will be laid along High Street, starting near the intersection of

Manchester Street
, from the middle of next week. The street will become one-way, heading from
Manchester Street
to
Tuam Street
, for the duration of the work.

Tuam Street
Drainage work has been delayed on Tuam Street while the Domo and Witchery buildings are assessed for damage following the Boxing Day earthquake. It is likely this will commence in the next week or two.

Drop-in information session next week

The project team is holding a drop-in session at the High Street Café,

215 High Street
, next Thursday morning, 20 January, at 10am. Please feel free to come along for an update on the tram project and to ask questions of the Project Manager and Construction Manager.

Lichfield Street

Tracks are being laid this week to the east of

Manchester Street
. The track will continue east before turning right, across the road, into
Poplar Street
. Pedestrian access from
Lichfield Street
to
Poplar Street
will be restricted while the curved tracks are being laid across
Lichfield Street
. This section of work is expected to take four weeks to complete during February. Vehicular access to
Poplar Street
during this period will be via
Ash Street
.

Cathedral Square

Work is set to start on

Colombo Street
, near
Cathedral Square
, early next week. The construction team had expected to be   working near the intersection of
Hereford Street
this week, however damage to buildings on
Hereford Street
during the Boxing Day earthquake has affected traffic management plans and caused a delay.
Colombo Street
from Hereford to Worcester will be reduced to one-way northbound when work starts. The road will be closed entirely to traffic when construction is carried out in the road alongside the Cathedral – this is expected to take effect from mid-February.

The project team will keep businesses and residents up to date with progress. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact: Project Manager Matt Cummins, (03) 941 8236 or Matt.Cummins@ccc.govt.nz

Businesses Under a Cordon and Currently closed

We are also hoping to see

Manchester Street
open up for traffic shortly... long over due mind you but happy an end is in sight. We are encouraging council to take stronger control of the demolitions in the future as we cannot afford one building to hold the city to ransom for so many months putting many businesses at risk.

We have seen a few more businesses open in the last week which has been great. You will have all noted many buildings now getting attention and hope to see more businesses open in the weeks to follow.

I will be meeting with Gina Dellabarca, Westpac South Island Manager on Monday to discuss the return of their 562 staff back into the city. We all hope that Westpac's long standing relationship with the city centre continues to be a positive one. I will keep you posted.
