Latest Update - CBD Earthquake Recovery
Friday, 28 January 2010 5:29 p.m.
Hi everyone.
I believe it is crucial for the city business community to ensure they deliver the best possible experience to their customers and we need to collectively change our culture to deliver positive messages at the counter. Yes we have issues and I think everyone knows this, so we need to deal with our issues separately to how we serve our customers. Lets make sure we deliver the best possible service so the visiting public enjoy spending their discretionary dollar in the city which will encourage them to repeat the process.
We have some very exciting things coming up which you all will be able to take part in with the Boxing Day Replay promotion, The Winning Wheel Promotion, Festival of Flowers, The Ellerslie Flower Show, Rugby World Cup and the completion of the Tram extension all happening over the coming months.
Promotion
Well it has been a very busy time working to make sure the Boxing Day promotion is on track. It seems to be getting bigger and bigger with many businesses wanting to take part. Thank you to all of you for supporting this promotional initiative. Remember, this is a vehicle for you to take advantage of for you business. All the major players are getting involved so make sure you support with advertising in one of the newspaper features being sold into businesses now.
Both the Star and The Press are doing something so please make sure you make contact if you are interested.
The Star - Rodney Rodney Laredo
The Press - Contact your usual Press sales consultant or Meg Marsh P: 943 2526 or E: meg.marsh@press.co.nz
Radio - We will have some radio representation and have secured some advertising from sponsorship
Festival of Flowers The Festival of Flowers invites 10 inner city businesses to be a part of the Festival of Flowers. They will supply troughs, soil, mulch and flowers which can be placed in front of their premises. They would require a small contribution of $10 to cover cost of soil ( Oderings are generously supplying the flowers and Tuitime are sponsoring us with mulch).
Planting would happen next week between 31st Jan and 4th Feb, and delivered to businesses by 10th Feb. They will have volunteers to do the planting. Please let them know by Wed 2nd who would be interested. Contact Lisa Mills Festival Coordinator - T 365 5403 - M 027 814 0785 - E festival.lisa@xtra.co.nz - W festivalofflowers.co.nz
Ellerslie Window Competition You should have all received a Ellerslie Flower Show Window competition, which was delivered last week by our ambassadors. I ask you all to make an effort to get a window in to support this event. There will be many people in the city and it would be great to see the city businesses supporting it. If you have not received any information, please let me know and I will send you a digital copy. The Winning Wheel - With The Breeze
The CBD of Christchurch has taken a hit lately and The Breeze would like to be a part of getting the community back into the city centre to do their shopping
They would like to give away a shop vouchers from the CBD retailers every second hour from 10am till 6pm daily for six weeks to encourage The Breeze family to head there to do their shopping as well as raising awareness of the extensive shopping available in the CBD.
The promotion is a comprehensive six week on air event on The Breeze and has been created to encourage the community to shop in our city centre.
From the 14th of February until the 26th of March we will have a call to win in the hours of 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. The caller who gets through each time will get to play A – Z around the CBD and spin the wheel!
The announcer will spin the wheel and the listener will take home what ever voucher it lands on.
There will be adlibs each day that will inform listeners to listen out for their chance to play A – Z around the CBD. While teasing the competition element they will also mention around 5 of the businesses involved in the promotion and encouraging people to come in and shop there.
We will also run 15 second trailers during the six weeks telling people to listen out for their chance to play A – Z around the CBD.
I will send out the full proposal to you all over the weekend to give you a better understanding of how you can be involve
Tram work restarts for 2011
Work has now started on the tram extension project last week with construction zones in Cathedral Square, Lichfield
and High Streets starting this week. The project team are holding weekly site meetings for the High Street businesses to ensure they keep them well informed and this also gives the businesses a chance to talk over issues they feel may be affecting their businesses.
Progress update It is expected it will take five to six weeks to lay tram tracks along High Street. Drainage work on Tuam Street is being carried out this week - by Friday one lane of traffic running from Manchester Street to High Street will be reinstated and the work is due to be completed by the end of the weekend.
Paving work on upper High Street, outside Java, is continuing and you will see fences reduced over coming weeks as this work progresses. This will improve the line-of-sight and pedestrian access from City Mall to High Street.
Work is progressing well along Lichfield Street and by the end of next week will be moving to the south side of the road and into the area around the entrance to Poplar Lane. Two lanes of traffic on Lichfield Street have been maintained for the duration of this work.
Pedestrian access Pedestrian access across the work site will be maintained during construction. The construction team will increase the number of crossings (using specially designed steel bridges) to ensure there are at least two crossing points for the duration of construction.
Storage of construction materials Where practical, the construction team will store materials off-site, so as to reduce the visual clutter in the street. The area presently being used to store pipe and track has been fenced off because of traffic management and safety issues - the area would remain fenced-off whether the materials were stored there or not.
Parking and delivery vehicles Parking spaces on the south side of High Street need to be removed for road and pedestrian safety while work is underway. As construction progresses along High Street, parking spaces will be reinstated as soon as possible.
The construction team can temporarily shift safety barriers if you are expecting a special delivery and need access adjacent to your business. To arrange this, please contact Construction Manager Kieran Shine on 027 217 6574 and he will have the barriers moved.
A limited number of parking coupons offering customers an extra hour free at Christchurch City Council car parks - in addition to the first hour free already available - have been purchased by the tram project team and are available to retailers.
Traffic light sequencing at Lichfield Street After discussing the one-way issues faced in High Street, the traffic light phasing will be modified so that only Lichfield and Manchester streets have green signals, (the High Street phase will be removed from sequence until the two lanes are re-instated).
Hours of work The construction team generally work from 7.30 am to 5.30pm. Construction contractor Downer is used to working in close proximity to retailers, having just completed the redevelopment of City Mall and in Oxford Terrace and upper High Street. Where possible, particularly noisy work will not be carried out over busy lunchtime periods. If you have a concern about work immediately outside your business, please don't hesitate to contact Construction Manager Kieran Shine on 027 217 6574 and he will endeavour to address the issue.
Signage "Businesses open as usual" signs will be placed around the work site to let people know that retailers are up and running and encourage shoppers.
The project team will keep businesses and residents up to date with progress. Please feel free to contact:
Project Manager Matt Cummins: (03) 941 8236 or Matt.Cummins@ccc.govt.nz
The Project Construction Manager: Kieran Shine: 027 217 6574 or Kieran.Shine@downer.co.nz
Road Blocks
High - St Asaph Street
Due to the sewer project occurring in the area. There will be electronic sign boards south of the intersection on Madras and east of the intersection on St Asaph advising that access to High Street is via Madras and Tuam (or similar words)
Tuam Street - High Street Tuam Street will be blocked while drainage work is carried out over the Tuam/High Streets. However there will be vehicle access to Wilsons Carpark on Tuam Street. These works have to be carried before the tram extension work can be carried out. These works are expected to be completed early next week.
Manchester Street
There are still a number of closures along Manchester Street. However, there is one way access for all north bound traffic right through Manchester Street now. We were expecting to see two way traffic being introduced through the Manchester / Hereford Street intersection at some point this week but it seems to be déjà vu with still no pedestrian of vehicular access through Hereford Street at this point. However, two-way traffic is now open along Manchester Hereford Street intersection.
