Latest Update
Friday, 4 February 2010  6:00 p.m.

Hi everyone,

Great news - A big thanks to the City Councillors who voted in favour of extending the Two Hours Free Parking to the end of February.

I am delighted to advise some news we have all been eagerly waiting to hear. The repair work to the ground floor of the Canterbury Centre building on the corner of High and Cashel Streets has now been completed and Westpac have confirmed they are re-opening their branch on the ground floor on Monday 7 February 2011. The team at Westpac are looking forward to being closer to their customers and back in the heart of the city.

Westpac is hoping to relocate some of their other customer facing teams from their current temporary location back to the first floor of the Canterbury Centre.

In the meantime, repairs to the upper floors of the building will continue and are expected to take some months.

In addition to some of the Westpac team 'coming home' they are going to encourage staff to participate in our Boxing Day Replay on 12 February 2011, by providing incentives to all their people based in Christchurch, to come into town and support the retailers and businesses.

So, welcome home Westpac - we are pleased to have you back and appreciate your ongoing support and commitment to the wider communities in Canterbury and the heart of our city.

I am also delighted to inform you that Westpac have also taking naming sponsor for out Winning Wheel promotion. Well done and thank you for the support.

Promotion

I would like to thank all of you who have stepped up to support both the Boxing Day and Winning Wheel promotions. To date we have secured a huge amount of funding to support these initiatives either by sponsorship, retailer support or earthquake recovery funding assistance.

The Winning Wheel retail voucher donations are close to 20k. Well done. Remember there is still plenty of time to get in and support the winning wheel promo. Give me a call or send me an email to register your support.

The Winning Wheel - With The Breeze

We have had an initial good response to the winning wheel promotion with just on $20,000 worth of vouchers coming in. We have about a half of what we need for this promotion to really be effective so I ask that you consider the points below of what it will do for the city centre, your business and area. One precinct went around and pulled all the businesses in their area together which will give them a good representation. Make sure your area does the same and supports each other.

  • Lets people know your business is open

  • Brings the winners into the city and to visit your store

  • They will spend more money while in the city

  • Raises the profile of the city centre for a six week period

Each business that donates a $100 voucher toward the promotion will receive $462.50 of air time which is very good value.

Ellerslie Window Competition
There is still time to put an entry into the window competition so I encourage you all to give this consideration. It is a major city event and it is important we get behind it. I have attached a newsletter with all the details.

Graffiti

Graffiti is a  four  million dollar problem in our city and word on the street is that it  might get worse as we approach the World Cup. As we approach the Rugby World Cup it will be in your interests as a business and property owner to quickly report and irradiate graffiti quickly. One city building recently hit has sustained $20,000 damage due to one graffiti event. This is becoming a major city issue.

Restorative Justice Coordinator Grant Harris from the graffiti office and he has offered to assist the city centre as much as they can. If you are a building owner and want assistance with graffiti removal they will help. The only cost to you is the supply of paint for your building but please make sure you call their office quickly so the problem does not escalate.

Tram work restarts for 2011

Tram extension works are now moving along well and the issues raised by the lower High Street businesses have been attended to. The project management team asked if a weekly email update would sufficiently replace the weekly meeting and all attending Thursdays meeting agreed it would. The businesses asked that the update included a progress report of other works being carried out in there area including the Sewer upgrade on

St Asaph Street
. However, if you have any particular issues that you need answers to please make sure you contact either the Project or Construction managers. Details below.

The project team will keep businesses and residents up to date with progress. Please feel free to contact:

Project Manager Matt Cummins:                                (03) 941 8236 or Matt.Cummins@ccc.govt.nz

Demolitions

It is timely to update you all on the current status of the road closure around 160 Manchester Street.   After a couple of false starts, the CCC has advised me that they expect to be able to get Manchester street open to two way traffic tomorrow (Saturday).  This is subject to them being able to get the traffic lights working properly after damage was caused by the demolition.

The

160 Manchester St
demo crew is now working on recovery of bricks for use in a new project.

The other matters of potential interest to you are the demolition of the Carnivores building at

207 Manchester St
and
176 Manchester St
(Fabulousness).  Both of these have been started and are expected to take approximately 4 weeks.  The demo crews will be working within the current cordons and so no additional disruption to traffic is expected from this demolition work.

I will let you know if there is any significant change to these plans.
