City Trading
Still variable and many businesses still have not recovered to a usual trading pattern. Many people are still concerned that the city is unsafe and some still think that we have been flattened. However, some businesses are running great promotions that are proving to be successful so I ask you again to ensure you use your databases and incentivise your customers back into the city. We are not out of the woods yet so I encourage you all to do what you can to encourage people back into the city.

Christmas Trading Hours
We have posted recommended Christmas Trading hours on our website. These are based on Ballantynes trading hours with the exception of 1st January. To view these hours clink on the link: http://www.christchurchcity.org.nz/trading-hours.php

Promotion & Advertising
I cannot stress enough the importance of promoting your business to your database, encouraging people back into the city.

FREE Recovery Noticeboard A big thanks to the Mainland Press as they are listing a free recovery noticeboard in their community publications that include Bay Habour News, Nor'West News, Pegasus Bay News and Southern View. This is to give an update following the earthquake for your customers. Simply contact Jessica at Jessica@bayharbournews.co.nz with a message of around 30 words to let people know if you are open for business, if you have relocated, if they need to use a different entrance for you workplace or if you are closed at present due to the earthquake.
Down Town: Lookout for the DOWNTOWN supplement in The Press on Thursday this week, showcasing the very-open Central City. The Press has been working with fellow central city retailers to help get the message out to the Canterbury residents that the central city is open for business. Many shops are on sale offering great discounts at a time when people really need them. Consider coming into the city to start your Christmas shopping (yes, really!), enjoy spring by the river, have a coffee outside at one of the cafes – and enjoy the centre of our city.

October Fest: Poplar Lanes are holding their annual October Fest this Friday and Saturday. Their will be great beers and entertainment provided during the promotion.

Cup & Show Week: Don't forget Cup & Show Week starts 6th November. For details go to http://www.christchurchcity.org.nz/cup--show-week-1.php  to view the calendar of events.

Horse Drawn Tram: Regardless of all the issues we face in the city. we will still try and bring the Horse Drawn Tram back in for Christmas. We require funding to get this to happen and we will be talking to last years sponsors and see what we can pull together. We will keep you posted.

City Parking
We are still working with council to see if we can get the two hour free parking to continue 'till Christmas. We see this as a long term initiative and will work with council on how it could be funded. Obviously, the immediate cost would be less than the loss of businesses and jobs in the city. We understand our request is waiting to be placed on the council agenda for discussed at the next council meeting. We have received support from CDC and Chamber of Commerce on this initiative and will keep you posted on progress.

New Business
It is always encouraging to see new businesses opening in the city and we have been fortunate to have very little empty space coming out of this winter. It is my understanding that there are a number of international brands looking to open in the city and with the potential of Central City getting the needed attention to assist revitalisation maybe the right signal these businesses need to consolidate their decision to open here.

National retailer Paper Plus - opened in Cashel Street City Mall
Nicolas Jermyn Shirtmakers - opening soon in Cashel Mall
City Chic - opened recently cnr Cashel & High Streets
Shades Arcade have had a number of additions
                                 Premi - Craft store
                                 Kiwi Curries express
                                 Spud Stop
                                 Caffeine Lab is to expand

High Street: Six businesses were closed on Friday 1st Oct due to some buildings being deemed unsafe. Some of the building owners have started work on the building facades but these works will take some weeks to complete.

The Tram extension work is underway again from Cashel - Lichfield Street. Most businesses in this section are happy with the way works are progressing but obviously looking forward to the completion.
